Hydro Flask Introduces New Copper

STEM school prepares

This was not the typical summer off for Anthony Matthews, principal of Colorado STEM Academy in Westminster. The former Flynn Elementary principal has been very busy the past few months working to prepare the new STEM, science, technology, engineering and math education school in Adams County School District 50.

With the first day of school just around the corner on Aug. 19, Matthews is excited to finally open the doors to Colorado STEM Academy to 200 students in grades third through sixth for the first year. After the initial year, the school will increase in size to 250 students followed by a build-out of 300 students by the 2015-2016 school year with students in grades three through eight.

For months renovations have been happening to the school, which is the old Crown Pointe Academy building at 72nd Avenue and Irving Street in Westminster. Matthews said majority of the renovations have taken place in the west wing the building and include the design and construction of larger classrooms and science and engineering labs.

“We have two big labs, a design lab and a build lab that will be utilized by all of the students,” he said. “The design lab includes a 3D printer and scanner and a laser engraver and our build lab has a variety of tools for the students to use and build items for projects and assignments.”

Every classroom will have 15 iPads, 15 Chromebooks and will be equipped with SMART Boards and a SMART sound system. Matthews said classrooms will also have some desk top computers and the furniture will allow for a more collaborative approach to learning.

“We purposely bought desks that could be maneuvered into different size groups so that the teachers had the freedom to set up their classroom the way they wanted to allow for their students to be able to work collaboratively together,” he said. “

For Edgar Lista, the technology education and engineering teacher at Colorado STEM Academy, the idea of collaborative teaching is something he’s very excited about. Lista, who is new to the district and comes from the Douglas County School District, jumped at the opportunity to work in a smaller school where he could continually work with the same students from third grade to eight grade.

He said it’s exciting to work in a brand new school with amazing resources and tools that will allow his students to create something and actually have the opportunity to build their creation.

“Working here is a great opportunity for me to create a culture of collaboration among not only the students but also the teachers,” Lista said. “I’m just so excited to see what drives the students and be a part of that. I just want the students to be excited about what they’re doing and I think this school will provide that excitement.”

Lista is just one of 13 educational staff hired at Colorado STEM Academy. Matthews said for the past couple weeks the staff’s been attending training in preparation of the first day of school.  Colorado STEM academy will also be the first school in Adams County School District 50 to be an innovation school, which allows the school to offer extended days and an extended year.

Bringing fabrication to the fight

The noise of metal being blasted by water jetting from a machine at Mach 3 overwhelms the room. On one side of the shop, joints creek under the extreme pressure of a metal press; sparks fly from another corner.

In the 354th Maintenance Squadron's metals technology shop, Icemen can be found welding metal, manufacturing parts for F-16 Fighting Falcon, or repairing just about any type of metal that has been torn, broken or overworked.

"Any shop on base that needs a part or specialty tool built, whether it be aluminum, titanium or any other kind of metal, we're the guys," said Staff Sgt. Joshua Osvold, 354th MXS NCO in charge of metals technology.

Commonly, a part for an aircraft can't be bought or is just cheaper to make. Technicians running the equipment at the metals shop fabricate these special orders to precision accuracy.

"We are dealing with thousandths of an inch every day," said Senior Airman Robert Mason, 354th MXS metals technology journeyman. "Every measurement has to be exact. We consider grease holes, expansion, pressure ratings and every other characteristic of the part being fabricated."

Tools are an integral part of the aircraft metals technology work center. Airmen are certified to run water jets, which pierce metal using 55,000 pounds per square inch of water and abrasive mixture. They use computer numerically controlled or "CNC" machines to create 3-D cuts in even the hardest steel. They also use more common tools like welders and presses.

Although the technology executes the precision cutting, Osvold said there is no lack of dedication and hard work from the individuals who program these machines to function properly.

"Every design cut or piece of metal shaped has to be built in a CNC drafting program," he said. "Many people believe the machines do all the work, but water pressure has to be changed, calibrations have to be made and designs aren't automatically drawn by computers."

Mason said the job can be challenging yet rewarding, especially when running a machine which takes extreme calibration and intricacy to program.

"We may have to dislodge a stuck bolt or build a bushing for landing gear, it doesn't matter; every day is something different," he said. "It's hard to describe being able to overcome challenges and accomplish something significant on a daily basis."

Planning to make the Air Force a career, he said the best part about the job is being able to overcome challenges every day and make "pretty much anything" out of a chunk of metal.

"We are capable of fabricating complex products to support the mission here; anything to keep the jets in the air or the equipment on the ground running, no matter how long it takes," Mason said. Shawnee High School students build mini golf course

Engineering students from Shawnee High School recently showcased their drafting, design, engineering and technology skills when they designed and constructed a custom, nine-hole miniature golf course in the school’s courtyard. They showed their compassion for a fellow student when they donated proceeds from the attraction to the classmate in the midst of a health crisis.

“Throughout the year, 11th and 12th graders have learned about various science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) principles, which were put to the test through this mini-golf course,” engineering teacher Stefani Kirk said.

Fellow students, staff and neighboring elementary schools were invited to play the course. Shawnee’s math and science clubs planned end-of-year parties around it. The amusement was also open to the public for a community family fun night.

“The small fee ($1) we collect from those who play the course would have been used to reimburse students for out-of-pocket expenses incurred for supplies used to build their projects,” Kirk said. “But then a suggestion was made to donate the funds to Karing for Katie instead.”

After a unanimous vote by the students, all proceeds from the miniature golf course were earmarked for Karing for Katie-Katie’s Journey, a fund that supports fellow student Katie Kernan as she undergoes treatment for a brain tumor.

This is the second year Kirk has used a miniature golf course as a learning project.

“It was an original idea inspired while playing mini-golf with my husband,” Kirk said. “While doing research I found out about other teachers who had also tried it.”

Kirk plans for the project all year, mentioning it to parents at back-to-school night in September so they can start collecting and saving particular recyclable materials including wooden pallets, plywood, 2-foot by 4-foot electronic components and motors. The students buy some of their own supplies but may also request donations from local retailers.

Each golf hole is constructed of timber and lined with carpet padding. “Floor Coverings International in Southampton is a phenomenal sponsor,” Kirk said. Students were allotted a 6-foot by 10-foot portion of carpet padding for use in the project.

In addition, Photoshop skills are required to create a flyer and a poster to publicize the mini-golf course to students and the community. Students use a laser-engraver to create a marker that identifies each hole by number. All of these skills are considered during the grading process.

“They work on constructing the final project for about three or four weeks in class and at home,” Kirk said. “There are daily checkpoints that have to be met so I can be certain the project is on schedule. They had to present rough sketches and then final drawings done to scale on a computer.”

Because of all the planning and long lead time for collecting raw materials, the holes can be pretty dynamic, with moving parts like a windmill or multi-level holes that include a water component. The construction phase also had deadlines.

“Everyone has a cell phone that can take photos, so they would show me photos of supplies and preliminary work, what they had completed at home on their own,” Kirk said.

“There can be tons of changes that take place during the final weeks of the project, when improvisations and changes take place during the build phase,” Kirk said. “Every change has to be made on paper as well. Nashua technical education programs’ cutting edge has dulled

When Nashua High School North was being built a dozen years ago, the city was on the cutting edge of career and technical education, placing its programs – literally – front and center at the new building.

Many students viewed technical education programs as alternatives for students not planning to attend college, but city educators wanted to change that perception.

“It was all part of the idea that students will be more engaged in education if it’s viewed as relevant to their future,” Superintendent Mark Conrad said. “We were focused on making CTE programs not seen as programs for only one type of student.”

And while Conrad said both city public high schools have worked hard over the last 10 years to keep that mission alive, it’s time to review the district’s practices.

“It’s been 10 years,” he said. “There are times when, due to rapidly changing environments or student interest, you need to step back and evaluate. This is really the first time we started to do that in a serious way.”

The Board of Education heard from members of a new committee last month that was formed to review the career and technical education programs in the city, discussing plans to review and revamp some programming.

While the changes to the programs are still being discussed, Conrad said the review is an important step toward maintaining the city’s focus on career readiness for students.

In 2001, when Nashua North was being designed and plans for a renovation of Nashua South were coming together – a $143 million project – both schools featured a physical focus on their technical education programs.

Many schools tucked their career centers at the back of the building or in a separate center, but the designs for the new schools had those programs right through the front door.

North’s cosmetology and graphic arts programs are to the right of the main entrance, and its cafe and culinary arts program is located off the lobby.

Nashua South features the Purple Panther Preschool, staffed in part by students from its early childhood education program, a television production studio and laser marking machine lab.

The city planned to have a system that would guide freshmen and sophomores toward a career path, encouraging them to select a career academy and CTE program during their junior and senior years.

“I do think in the early years we met that goal,” Conrad said. “At that point in time, the high dropout rate was a concern, and CTE was viewed as something that could be a significant way of reducing the dropout rate.”

But the last few years have seen a lot of changes and challenges for the technical programs, he said, including turnover in the director position.

And while the high schools have successfully enrolled students of all backgrounds and ability in the programs, there hasn’t been enough of a focus on getting students to think about career opportunities at a younger age, Conrad said.

The city will begin those conversations in middle school to allow for better planning for technical education enrollments in high school.

And he said he’s confident the work will help maintain the city’s focus on helping all students, no matter their higher education plans.

“The last couple years, we lost focus a little bit because of turnover,” Conrad said. “But we have a very strong team now that will help move us forward.”

Losail MX Track ready to host a historical MXGP

MX1 defending Champion Antonio Cairoli has recently admitted that he is really excited to race in Qatar under the floodlights and he is also looking forward to visiting the country and getting involved with a different culture. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider, who has six FIM Motocross World Titles under his belt, took part in the Italian National Championship some weeks ago and he proved that he is fully fit to the defend the Title already in the first Grand Prix.

Rockstar Energy Suzuki World’s Clement Desalle, who finished second last year, is determined to start the 2013 season fighting for the top of the podium. The Belgian rider was the only one who led the MX1 standings last year apart from Cairoli, so he is one of the clear favourites to stop the Italian to claim another MX1 Title. Desalle took also part in some international off-season races and he also obtained excellent results. This year Desalle will have his compatriot Kevin Strijbos in the team, so the Rockstar Energy Suzuki World squad expects to be fighting for a double podium position in several Grand Prix.

Another candidate to be fighting for the top three positions is the Monster Energy Yamaha rider Steven Frossard, who is coming back to the FIM Motocross World Championship fully fit again after having missed almost the whole 2012 season due to a knee injury. The French rider finished second in 2011 in his rookie year in the FIM MX1 World Championship, so he is for sure another rider to be looking at not only for this Grand Prix, but also during the whole season. Joel Roelants will be the new MX1 teammate of Frossard and the Belgian is looking forward to starting his rookie season in the FIM MX1 World Championship.

For Gautier Paulin it will be the second year in the FIM MX1 World Championship and he has recently admitted that he feels much more comfortable with his bike this season and he is ready to be more often on the rostrum. The Kawasaki Racing Team rider finished third last year and he managed to win the second Grand Prix of 2012, which took place in Sevlievo, Bulgaria. Belgian rider Jeremy Van Horebeek, who finished third last year in the FIM MX2 World Championship, has joined the Kawasaki Racing Team this season on his debut in the MX1 class.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Ken De Dycker was the big surprise last year finishing fifth in the FIM MX1 World Championship and fighting for the top three positions at every Grand Prix. It will be the second season for the Belgian rider in the KTM factory team, so his main goal is to be more consistent and try to be as close as possible to his teammate’s level.

The Honda World Motocross team is also very excited to starting the new season with Evgeny Bobryshev and their new rider Max Nagl, who had an extraordinary end of 2012 season after his comeback from a serious back injury. Bobryshev had a difficult season last seasn, but he wants to prove that he is able to be fighting for the top three positions, and his teammate Nagl will do his best to join the Russian at every Grand Prix, even if he is still recovering from a hand injury he suffered a month ago in the Starcross of Mantova.

CLS MX1 Monster Energy Kawasaki Pro Circuit’s Tommy Searle will take part in his first Grand Prix in the FIM MX1 World Championship after having finished second in the FIM MX2 World Championship in 2012. Last year the British rider had already the opportunity to test the 450cc bike, as he represented Great Britain in the MX1 class in the Motocross of Nations. Searle has always said that he feels very comfortable in the 450cc bike, so he will have to prove already this weekend if he is able to be fighting for the top positions in his rookie year.

2008 FIM MX1 World Champion David Philippaerts, who is fully recovered from the wrist injury he suffered last year in the Grand Prix of Sweden, will be back this weekend fully motivated wearing the colours of Honda Gariboldi. Another rider who changed team for this 2013 season is Shaun Simpson who is looking forward to race with his brand new TM Factory Racing machine.

Acoustic Duck Calls made in Monette

Acoustic Duck Calls are made on Buffalo Island in Monette by Chris Hill. The Hills, Chris and his wife, Amy, have had Acoustic Ducks Calls for two years.

Duck call-making went from a hobby to a passion for Chris in just four years.

Chris, a longtime avid duck hunter, has always appreciated duck calls. It was about four years ago when Amy found some wood from a hackberry tree and brought it home. With a set of files and a mini lathe, Chris made his first duck call.

"I just wanted to call the ducks on something I made myself," Chris said. "Some of the guys I hunted with liked the way it sounded and so I started making a few for friends. I would have never thought I would be making duck calls for the public."

The motto for Acoustic Duck Calls is "Music to their Ears." The business soon grew out of the back porch area and into a small shop where the Acoustic Ducks Calls are custom made by Chris. Amy is also part of the operation and enjoys taking the calls, helping with the shipping, and polishing. She said she leaves the tools to Chris.

"We were fortunate enough to purchase Acoustic Duck Calls about two years ago," Chris said. "The original creator of Acoustic Duck Calls was Randal Floyd, who passed away in 2006. He started his business in 1979. Randal made an awesome call and I admired his passion for duck calls and hunting. He was a good mentor."

In addition to spending hours in his shop and a full time job, Chris takes time to teach kids how to blow a duck call. He doesn't care if it is one he made or not if a young person is interested in learning, Chris will work with him.

Chris and Amy are excited to have a young man from Paragould, Brayden Buck, competing in the World Duck Call competition with an Acoustic Duck Call.

"When I made that first one four years ago, I could not even imagine one I made on a world stage," Chris said. "Brayden is awesome."

Acoustic Duck Calls made in Monette have been sold and shipped to Atlanta, Ga., Tennessee, Illinois, California, Louisiana, Texas, and other places far and near.

Chris has a passion for making duck calls. It is an art form and it takes an eye and an ear.

"I want every duck call right when it goes out of here," Chris said. "If someone doesn't like one of my calls, I want them to bring it back and tell me what it is they don't like about it. I want my customers satisfied."

Chris makes acrylic calls and various wood calls. There are advantages to each. The acrylic will hold its shape. He makes two types of calls, a timber call and an open water call. The calls are laser-engraved and can display company logos, names, etc. He can customize the call for any occasion. He made 10 for the BIC FFA auction which featured a Mustang, the school's mascot.

Through the years he has been able to update the equipment and uses a computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine.

"It is a challenge to get the tones correct," Chris said. "It has to make the same sounds as a duck makes."

Chris and Amy recently held a duck-calling contest at the Big Lake Chili Cooking Contest in Manila.
